To some of you this name might sound familiar or probably very familiar. Back in 2007 the Shox we're heavy on 6'8 Small Forward Johnny Coy from St. Joseph's, Missouri. Coy is a scout and rivals 3 star, is the #139 player in the class of '08 according to Rivals along with being the #23 best Small Forward in the class. Scout ranks him #26 at his position. That's a pretty nice resume right there.
Many believe Coy's decision came down to three schools; Arizona State, Creighton and Wichita State. The Sundevils won him over in the end but only for a season. Coy made visits to both Creighton and Wichita State. However there appears to be interest from other schools in the area like Drake, UMKC, Mizzou, Missouri State, and possibly Kansas. One article stated that current Drake coach Mark Phelps recruited him to Arizona State.
Coy has stated though that he would like to be a two-sport athlete, playing both basketball and baseball. He wants to go somewhere within three hours of home (check). He wants to go somewhere to play basketball and baseball (big check). Most of the pieces in this puzzle are fighting together. Coy would also be eligible to play next season due to transfer hardship rules.
Here's what I think it comes down to. WSU and of course Creighton. The Jays have a solid basketball program and a decent baseball program. WSU has an uprising basketball program (that has been good) and a prestigious baseball program. If Drake had a baseball team I'd say they'd be the favorite right now but they don't, too bad. UMKC doesn't have a diamond team either. That leaves maybe Mizzou or KU. He wouldn't get to play at KU and they reportedly weren't very interested in Coy in the first place. Mizzou is a possibility but it doesn't appear he had serious interest in them before.
Could this be the first Top 150 player to come to Wichita State in the last decade?
